LL 224

Lang Acquisition Cog & Soc

This course introduces students to applied approaches to linguistics, the study of human language. We first explore how humans acquire language from birth (first language acquisition) and later in life (second+ language acquisition). Next, we study how language is represented and processed in the mind (psycholinguistics), where language(s) are ‘located’ in the brain, and what happens to languages(s) in cases of brain trauma or degenerative diseases (neurolinguistics). The course concludes by looking at how language functions and varies in society and within/across multilingual populations. Exclusions: EN323/LL323.
